CARE-TBI Mailing List Welcome Letter
Below is the latest update to the Welcome Letter each of you received when joining this list. You can use this page instead of keeping your welcome letter at home to review some list operations. I may sometime soon use this page rather than using the enitre Welcome Letter.
Dear Subscriber,
Welcome to CARE-TBI Mailing List.
We are Martha Burnham and Frank Tetto, list owners of CARE-TBI, our list for Caregivers and Family members of persons with a brain injury of any kind. Before we get into the instructions and operation of this list we want to stress to you the importance of reading this ENTIRE message, perhaps not now but sometime shortly, especially if you are new to mailing lists. There is also a copy of this letter at: http://www.tbinet.org/care/welcome_letter.htm There is a "Home" page for this list which contains everything you need to know about this list, please bookmark this page: http://www.tbinet.org/care/
On that page is a link to the List Rules. Please read these carefully before participating on the list. You will also be receiving an auto-generated message which describes some of the commands you can use to customize how the list works for you. Since this is generated by the Listserv software and we have put all the information about this list in this message, you can discard it if you want.
This list was started on May 5, 1996. You must be a Caregiver, Family Member or Friend of a BI survivor to subscribe to this list. Persons looking to sell services or products to the membership are not welcome. Professionals in the BI field are welcome to participate providing they are here to learn from us or to help. Advertizing products or services is strictly forbidden.
Be aware that this is an un-moderated list, in other words what you or anyone sends in, is sent directly to the subscribers without interference on my part. Because of this we cannot be responsible for its content. Although we can and will remove or "Moderate" an unruly subscriber if it ever becomes necessary.
Most subscribers to this list are family members and "veterans" of this list. Most conversations are regarding them and giving support to each other in their ongoing struggle. If you are here more for specific information on BI itself, treatments and therapies, you will have to ask your specific questions since what you seek may not come up in the discussions. Be assured however that everyone loves to help those less knowledgeable and are more than happy to answer specific questions. You will find the more you participate in the discussions, the more you will benefit.
List Rules:
Please go to: http://www.tbinet.org/care/list_rules.htmThis list is run in strict compliance of these rules. In order for you to remain on this list depends on your abilty to abide by them. Please read them BEORE participating on the list.
List Operation:
There are TWO addresses connected to this list.
1. List Address:
This is the actual List Address. You will use this address to send all your mail and replies to when interacting with the others on the list. When a message is sent to this address, everyone subscribed to the list will get a copy.
When REPLYING to a message posted on the list, your mailer software *should* address the message back to the list automatically, however, most of the newer mailer packages today have many options where to send the reply. You should check your first few replies before actually sending them to be sure it is going to the right address.
Many times, especially if you receive and send mail through a local network such as those though your employer, your replies *may* go to the wrong address. This is because of the way they are set up. Most of these problems can be worked out though your local technician with a little info from me.
If for some reason you want to reply privately, meaning you only want the author of the message to receive your reply, you will have to insert that person's e-mail address in the TO: field instead of the list address. Because this is a "support" mailing list, it is usually preferred that all mail go through the list so all can benefit from the contents.
2. Listserv or Command Address:
This is the address to send commands to the List software. The Software used for this mailing list is called "Listserv" and you may have already seen this in some messages.
You won't use this address very often, it is only used to Subscribe and Signoff from the list and a few other things. Below are the commands and instructions....
Address a message to the address above. Put anything in the SUBJECT: or you can leave it blank.
In the body of the message type any of the following commands and send the message. (ALL commands below can be in either upper or lower case)
Sub care-tbi <firstname lastname>
This will subscribe you to CARE-TBI. You have already done this once.
Signoff care-tbi
This will take you off the list and erase your data.
Set care-tbi NOMAIL
Will discontinue sending the mail until you send a MAIL command. Good when going on vacation so your mailbox doesn't fill up. This command DOESN'T Unsubscribe you, only turns your mail off temporarily. If you plan on using this command and will be gone over 2 weeks, use the SIGNOFF command instead. When you return, use the SUB CARE-TBI <first> <last> command.
Set care-tbi MAIL
Undo previous command and starts your mail again.
Set care-tbi DIGEST
Will send you only 1 message per day with all the previous days messages included in it. This is for those that don't post often and only want to read the messages. This is also good if you are on several mailing lists to keep mail separated.
Set care-tbi NODIGEST
Undo previous command.
Set care-tbi INDEX
Similar to DIGEST but only sends the Subject and first few lines of each message. You then can order the messages you want.
Set care-tbi ACK
Will only send you a brief message that your post (message to the list) was processed.
Set care-tbi NOACK
Turns the above off.
Set care-tbi REPRO
Sends you a copy of your posted messages. Used instead of ACK.
Set care-tbi NOREPRO
Turns the above off.
QUERY care-tbi
Shows YOUR current settings on this list. This includes all the personal settings above.
Review care-tbi
Will send you a list of the people who are subscribed to the list in the form of their e-mail address and name.
Info care-tbi
Retrieve information about this list.
Lists
Shows the different Mailing Lists available from the L-soft mail server from which this list runs from.
Help
Retrieve a Help file on Listserv commands
Info REFCARD
Sends you a list of all the commands Listserv accepts. This is one you may want to get right away.
INDEX care-tbi
Will send you a list of mail archives that you can retrieve. Good for finding and reading old or lost messages.
GET care-tbi <archive name>
This will send (retrieve) you the mail archive that you want after getting a list of them when using the INDEX command. Archive file names are in the form of LOG9701A. LOG being the first 3 letters of all archive files. The next two numbers is the year (97 being 1997) The next two numbers are the month (01 being January) The last letter is the week of the month, A being the first, B the second and so on.
All the messages posted to this list can be read and searched via the World Wide Web. (This will be easier than the INDEX and GET commands above.) This is so you can easily read mail you've missed or to search old messages. The address is: http://listserv.tbinet.org/archives/care-tbi.html
Because the archives are private, you must obtain a password in order to access them. The process is explained when you go to the web site at http://listserv.tbinet.org/archives/care-tbi.html. Depending on your ISP, it could take a day to have your password verified.
There is also a web page for your story (biography) for others to read from the list. You may want to go there now to read some of the other's stories. The address is:
http://www.tbinet.org/bio/ You will need a separate password to access these.
Hopefully we have covered everything you need to know about this list. If you have any questions at all you should probably ask them in the list itself unless they are of a personal nature in which case you can contact us at the address below.
Sincerely,
